Offered by one of the most prestigious universities in Romania in the field of life sciences, the Planning, Development and Maintenance of Green Spaces Master’s program, organized within the Department of Horticulture and Landscape, Faculty of Horticulture and Rural Development Business at USAMV Cluj-Napoca, defines four major strategic objectives for higher education training:
- Education for acquiring professional competences in landscape architecture and related fields.
- Scientific research and innovation necessary for informing and supporting professional activities.
- Professional practice required for the design and management of landscape developments at various scales. The PAISV Master’s program includes the conclusion of Internship Agreements for master’s students.
- Professional communication in landscape architecture and related fields. This objective is achieved through cooperation and partnerships with stakeholders in landscape architecture, as well as through the involvement of faculty members in supervising student publications and projects, organizing events, exhibitions, and competitions, and encouraging and guiding participation in professional events organized by other institutions.
Master’s students benefit from a curriculum aligned with European standards in the design, development, maintenance, and management of green spaces, providing a rigorous and contemporary foundation in landscape architecture and landscape planning. Students gain experience and practical skills by working on various design projects and collaborations with specialized firms in architecture and landscape architecture, ensuring that theoretical knowledge is reinforced through practical application.

Main area of study
From an educational perspective, professionals working in landscape architecture must assimilate broad knowledge resulting from the convergence of the following fundamental fields: natural sciences, engineering sciences, biological sciences, social sciences, humanities and art, while also developing general and specific competences in: Environmental sciences; Engineering techniques for plant and animal resources (horticulture; plant biotechnology); Life sciences – biology with its subfields: botany, physiology, and ecology; Economic and administrative sciences; Cultural-historical studies, architecture, and urbanism.
Landscape architects are involved in the conceptual design of various categories of green spaces within both urban and rural territorial structures, such as: Green spaces adjacent to agricultural land; Green spaces alongside transportation routes; Green spaces near water bodies; Green spaces within public, neighborhood, and residential gardens; Green spaces complementing parks, forest-parks, spa resorts, sports and leisure facilities; Restricted-access green spaces in residential, industrial, and commercial areas; Private or institutional green spaces.

Activities
The PAISV Master’s curriculum includes:
- Training in landscape-specific services, such as: Inventory and assessment of urban trees; Evaluation of dendro-floricultural planting material; Landscape and visual impact studies; Conceptual design: combining woody vegetation and creating floral compositions; applications of compositional elements and principles; Digital design and graphics for landscape operations; Preparation of technical documentation specific to landscape architecture; Planning sustainable green space development operations; Planning sustainable maintenance operations for projects at different scales; Consultancy services for green space management.
- Training in services related to landscape architecture, such as: Plant disease, pest, and weed control services; Interior plant design; Technical assistance in landscape construction; Landscape management through advanced digital analysis.
- Training in business administration for landscape-related enterprises.
- Training in scientific research and practical work, aligned with contemporary trends in landscape development.
- Preparation and defense of dissertation theses and projects.

Career Opportunities
The profession of landscape architect is classified nationally under COR Code 2 – Specialists in various fields; 21 – Science and engineering specialists; 216 – Architects, planners, surveyors, designers, with the basic group COR code 2162 – Landscape Architects, subdivided into two occupational levels:
→ 216202 Landscape Architect;
→ 216201 Landscape and Territorial Planning Architect.
Landscape architects plan and design landscapes and open spaces for projects such as parks, schools, institutions, roads, green areas adjacent to commercial, industrial, and residential sites, as well as supervise and monitor the implementation, maintenance, and restoration of landscape developments.
The main profiles of green space design include recreational developments, leisure areas, educational and training spaces, and utility developments (dendro-floricultural bases, plantations for slope/ riverbank stabilization, plantations for watercourse protection, anti-erosion shelterbelts, screening plantations, sanitary protective plantations, etc.).
