The sixth edition of the Romanian Scientific Diaspora Conference – Smart Diaspora 2025 – will be held in Cluj-Napoca from November 4th to 7th, 2025. This event brings together a wide academic and research audience from Romania and abroad, with more than 800 participants expected to join workshops and plenary sessions dedicated to fostering scientific collaboration and partnership.
About the conference
Starting with its first edition in 2008, the Romanian Scientific Diaspora Conference has become both a benchmark and an instrument for promoting Romanian research at the global level, while also acting as a catalyst for the talent, expertise, and experience of the Romanian scientific diaspora.
The valorization of this remarkable resource, which includes some of the most promising talents, can become reality, as mechanisms for collaboration among Romanian researchers—regardless of the country where they live—have already been established, providing valuable exchanges of ideas and best practices among Romanian professors and researchers, wherever they live and work, thereby broadening scientific horizons and supporting the development of research in Romania.
Each of the five editions organized so far (2008, 2010, 2012, 2016, 2023, gathering over 4,000 participants) has highlighted the special importance Romania places on science, technology, and innovation for the development of the knowledge society, economic and social progress, and the role of the diaspora.
Participants in previous editions have shared their expertise and research achievements from various fields, ranging from nanotechnology and biochemistry to economics and aerospace engineering, during exploratory workshops, turning the event into a true platform for international collaboration.
From November 4th to 7th, 2025, the Ministry of Education and Research together with UEFISCDI, in partnership with the Union of Cluj Universities (UUC)—Babeș-Bolyai University, Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, “Iuliu Hațieganu” University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, “Gheorghe Dima” Academy of Music, University of Art and Design—and the Romanian Academy, will organize the sixth edition of the Romanian Scientific Diaspora Conference—Smart Diaspora 2025
